Outsourcing Webflow development as an agency: how a good partnership works

Outsourcing Webflow development is, for many marketing, branding and creative agencies, the way to deliver websites without having to carry their own development team. The agency does what it does well: strategy, concept, design and the client relationship. A specialised partner builds the design in Webflow, in such a way that the client can work with it themselves afterwards. That works well, provided the agreements are right. In this article we explain how such a partnership works, what you can expect and what to look for when choosing a partner.
Why do agencies outsource Webflow development?
Agencies outsource Webflow development because the workload fluctuates and an in-house developer only pays off with a constant flow of projects. With a regular partner you can take on projects without worrying about capacity, and you keep the knowledge in house that matters for your clients.
On top of that, Webflow's capabilities are growing quickly: CMS structures, localisation, components, interactions, integrations. A partner who works with it every day knows the best approach and the pitfalls. That prevents a beautiful design from becoming a site the client cannot manage.
How does outsourcing Webflow development work?
Outsourcing Webflow development usually works in five steps: design handover, structure alignment, build, review and delivery. The exact details differ per agency and project.
Design handover
The agency delivers the design, usually in Figma, with desktop and mobile versions of the most important pages. The more consistently the design is set up, with a clear grid, fixed text styles and reusable components, the faster and better the build.
Structure alignment
Before we build, we align on the structure: which pages, which CMS collections, which components, which interactions. This is where we prevent surprises. A design that looks good on a static page also has to work with real content of varying length.
Build
We build the design in Webflow with a fixed class structure, often based on the Client-First system by Finsweet, and with variables for colours, typography and spacing. We build animations with Webflow interactions or GSAP, depending on what the design calls for.
Review
The agency reviews the build in a staging environment, on different screen sizes and browsers. We process comments in agreed rounds.
Delivery
We hand over the site in the Webflow workspace of the agency or the client, including an explanation of the CMS structure and a short training for whoever will manage the content.
White label or visible as a partner?
Both are possible, and it is a choice the agency makes. In a white label partnership we stay in the background and the agency communicates with the client. In a visible partnership we join technical meetings with the client, which is especially useful for complex projects with integrations or multiple languages. In both cases the client relationship stays with the agency.
What should you look for when choosing a Webflow partner?
When choosing a Webflow partner, look at experience, way of working, communication and what happens after delivery.
- Experience with Webflow. Ask for examples of comparable projects, particularly CMS structures and multilingual sites. A Webflow Partner status says something about experience and involvement with the platform.
- A fixed build method. A consistent class structure and naming make a site maintainable, even if someone else works on it later.
- Critical input. A good partner points out in advance which parts are difficult to build or manage, and suggests alternatives that respect the design.
- Communication. Clear planning, fixed moments for review and quick responses. If you work with international clients, English as a working language is useful.
- After delivery. Who handles small changes, extensions and maintenance? Agree on that in advance.
What can you expect from us as a partner?
You can expect us to build your design pixel-perfect and maintainable, to think along about structure and technology and never to approach your client without going through you. We are a Webflow Premium Partner and work with agencies in the Netherlands and beyond, under white label or as a visible partner.
Besides websites, we also build what often comes with them: integrations with CRMs, multilingual sites, client portals and custom solutions. That way, as an agency, you can also take on projects that go further than a marketing site.
How do you start a partnership?
Start with an introduction and a first project of limited scope, so both sides get to know the way of working. After that we set out agreements on handover, planning, review rounds and maintenance.
